Grade 8A

Greetings and thank you for stopping by the 8A web page!
The second quarter has come to an end and our students rather excited! (Yes, that marks the halfway point for this school year).
That also means it is Catholic Schools Week! This week we will be celebrating our annual pep-rally and boys basketball tournament against St. Cecilia's! GO PANTHERS!

Last quarter was full of fun learning experiences.
In eighth grade English we finished the Lord of the Flies and our culminating project associated with the book. The culminating projects were absolutely amazing and creative! What talented students I have! We then did a brief unit on English language origins. The students learned many foreign phrases that have been adapted into modern day English. Following our foreign phrases unit, we worked on persuasive writing and techniques. Students chose a topic to write a five-paragraph essay to influence someone to do of feel something. My they were not only persuasive, but also direct and strong!
Now the eighth graders are beginning their largest writing project of the year...the dreaded Research Report. Students picked either a famous person or event in history to research. The final product will be a whopping 12-page masterpiece. Although they fear this project in the beginning, it tends to be the one they remember the most and are so proud of.

Eighth grade science just finished learning and studying the periodic table, elements, and writing/balancing chemical equations. The students prepared and presented projects based on their assigned elements. They were to "act as the expert" and teach the class as much as possible about their element. Meanwhile, delivering the information in a clever, fun manner. We had some amazing presentations! Anything from a song and dance, to poetry, PowerPoint presentations, cobalt cupcakes, and even a children's book! Bravo eighth grade! Please feel free to stop by the 8th grade hallway to view the projects.

Seventh grade finished a unit on heredity and genetics. The students worked hard learning about dominant and recessive genes. They worked with partners to determine the traits of their "baby dragon" using Punnett squares. We just began a unit on animal adaptations necessary to their environments.
Both seventh and eighth grade classes have started write-ups for their Science Fair Boards. Below are some important dates for the Science Fair.

Please take a moment to mark down these important dates on your calendar.
Blessings,
Mrs. Campbell White
