Grade 7B
Dear Friends of 7B,
With the third quarter and Easter vacation behind us, our thoughts have turned to Spring and being able to finish the school year in a strong fashion. Please encourage your student to continue their good study habits until the very end of the school year. This may take some extra monitoring on your part. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns!
In literature the 7th grade has been reading Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor. This novel, about an African-American family living in the South in the 1930’s, has explored many interesting themes. It has been interesting to compare the 1930’s to the present day, discussing what has changed and what still needs changing. We will be done with this novel very soon, and will then begin our unit reading The Greek Gods.
In religion the 7th grade studied the various meanings and traditions of Holy Week. Some of our students even participated in the Stations of the Cross with the 8th grade. After Easter break the students were given their Confirmation books, and we are now using them to study that sacrament.
In 8th grade literature, the students have read the classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird. The many fascinating characters, themes and plot lines in this novel have made it an interesting quarter. The students have had many lively discussions about the themes of discrimination, racism, education, innocence and family. Their culminating projects will be on display in front of 7B starting April 22nd. Please come by and take a look at their creativity!
April 26th to 30th is “Spirit Week” at Holy Name School, leading up to the girl’s basketball tournament on Saturday, May 1st. The tournament takes place at St. Cecilia’s this year. Please try and attend to support our lady Panthers!
May 21st to May 23rd are the dates for the 8th grade musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. The student musical is always an evening of amazing creativity and entertainment. I encourage every parent and student to attend and support our 8th graders!
Our 7th grade end of the year trip to Great America is scheduled for Tuesday, June 1st. We WILL need parent chaperones to accompany us, so please let me know if you are able to participate. Also, please remember the provisions for attendance that were sent home in a letter last month. If a student has two “3’s” in conduct on their progress report, they will NOT be allowed to go on the trip.
At this point, the school year is truly flying by and summer will be here before we know it. Please let me know if you have any concerns about your student, and I will let you know if I do!
God bless you, and thank you for all you do for Holy Name,
Mrs. Rita Nolan

Some Reminders:
I will NOT accept late homework. With 110 students to teach and correct, it is simply unworkable to have students not follow the schedule I provide for them. This is the policy for the entire junior high. Homework missed due to absence can be made up within 2 days, but it is their responsibility to get the assignments.
Detention: Detention is held, as needed, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 to 3:30. If a student is given detention, he/she will call home and let you know. When I, personally, give a student detention I try to hold it on Tuesdays.
Tardies: If your child is tardy 3 times in one quarter they will receive one detention. If they are tardy 6 times in one quarter they will receive an in-school suspension and not be allowed on the honor roll that quarter.
Some Important Dates: The first Progress Report will be sent home around October 2nd. The first Report Card on November 6th.
Parent – Teacher conferences will be held November 9-10-11-12. 7:00am appointments will be available.
School pictures are this Friday, September 11th. Full uniform is mandatory.
The Spirit Mass will be held Sunday, September 20th at 9:30am. This is a mandatory Mass and will be followed by our International Food Festival, always a fun community-builder.
The IOWA standardized tests will begin on Monday, September 21st, and continue to September 29th. Please make sure your child is well rested and well fed those testing days.
October 2nd is the junior high High School information day, and parents are welcome to attend. More details to follow.
7th Grade will be going to Caritas Creek November 2nd to 6th. Much, much more information on this exciting trip to come!

Our first fundraiser of the year started September 8th and continues until September 28th. The students will be, with your help, selling Christmas wrapping paper, magazine subscriptions, and other gift items. This is one of only 3 fundraisers we are having this year, and we really need every family’s participation to make it a success. I have told 7B that I expect 100% participation, and am hopeful each family will sell $100.00 or more. As always, thank you for all your support.
