Grade 6A
Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome each of you and thank you for making the first step in becoming a partner in your child’s education. We have been working very hard these first two weeks, getting to know each other and learning all the new ways of 6th grade. Progress is being made each and every day and will continue throughout the year. It is my hope that we can work closely together to make this year a great year for all of us.
Since I am a new teacher, a little background about myself is that I grew up in San Francisco. I went to a catholic grammar school, then St. Ignatius and received my B.A. and credential from Sonoma State University. I have over four years of experience in the classroom; in both public and catholic school settings.
My Policies
Meetings
I am happy to meet with any of you for any concerns you might be having. Please call the school office and leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Homework/ Class work Help
I have told the students, but I am available most Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the first half an hour, if arranged with me before hand.
Behavior
Your children are expected to follow both school and classroom rules. I try to use as much positive reinforcement in the classroom as possible. If students continue to disrupt the classroom, they will receive detentions. Detentions are served on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; for 30 minutes after school. You will receive a phone call home if your student has received detention. (Detentions are also served for continuous forgotten supplies or out of uniform.)
Each grading period students will receive a grade in conduct. The scale is
1-4. A 2 is normal. If the student receives a 3 or 4, in either conduct or effort they can’t make honor roll.
Homework
Homework has a definite place in the educational process. It is an extension of the learning experience children has during the instructional day. Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. All homework is due on the following day, except spelling which is due on Fridays and or occasionally students will have special projects, that will have due dates of one week or later.
Homework will fall into one of these four categories:
Remedial Drill: this is an extension of work that has been introduced in class.
Research: This is work that involves the use of reference materials. It is often given on an extended time basis.
Unfinished Work: This is work that is not completed in class and is within the students’ capability to finish at home. For many of subjects, the homework is started in class, and if the student doesn’t finish, it is then given for homework. PLEASE remind your children to use their time efficiently.
Review: Students should spend some time at home studying and preparing for tests.
Missed Homework/Forgotten Homework
If students don’t have their homework with them at the time I am collecting it, it is late. If students forgot books at school, it is late. For each day the homework is late, it is deducted one point. So if the homework was worth 5 points, and the homework was three days late, the best the student could get is a 2/5.
If a student does not understand a homework assignment you may write a note to let me know. Forgotten books are not an excuse! I understand they are learning a lot of new things and at times can be confused by something. HOMEWORK is not meant to drive both you and the student crazy for hours. Please limit homework to a one hour maximum. (With the students fully focused on homework.)
If your child is making up missed or forgotten homework OR finishing school work when time was not used efficiently, then it might take a little more time. Please do not spend 3 hours on homework!
Ideas and concepts build upon each other, and with homework I want to reinforce what the student has learned that day or week.
Tests and Quizzes
Tests and Quizzes are given throughout the week for different subjects. I let the students know before hand when they will have a test or quiz. I also write it in the Daily News. (The Daily News you should have already received from your students this Monday. If not I have attached a copy.)
Spelling Quizzes- Pretest on Monday, Test on Friday.
Math- Fridays Review quiz from lessons we have already gone over.
Sinecerely,
Miss Rivieccio 6A
